Wool on a bike: pilling, sweat and how to beat both

Merino is the best fabric you can ride in — if you treat it right. Three habits that keep knitwear looking new after a summer of commuting.

Wool regulates temperature, resists odour and dries faster than most people expect. Its one weakness is friction: a backpack strap or a saddle rubbing the same spot every day.

Three habits that help

Rotate two knits instead of wearing one every day; the fibres recover overnight. Air it out instead of washing after every ride. When pills appear, remove them with a fabric comb, not a razor.

Washing, rarely

Hand-wash or use the wool cycle at 30 °C, then dry flat in the shade. A merino crew washed this way will outlast five cotton tees.
